The captain's official game account:
St. Croix’s Defeated by the Buzzards
The St. Croix Base Ball Club traveled northward and crossed bats with the Becker Buzzards in Sherburne County at the Palmer Township parks.
The day was hot and muggy with the air just hanging with moisture and the base balls not flying as far as usual. The Becker club won the toss and sent the St. Croix’s up to strike first. The St. Croix’s were able to tally one ace in their half of the inning, but the Becker club tallied twice in their half of the inning.
In the third inning, after the St. Croix’s failed to score, the Becker club struck the ball strongly and tallied three more times making the score Becker five aces to only one for the visiting St. Croix’s.
In the top half of the fourth inning, with two strikers already dead, the St. Croix’s used some skillful striking and ran the bases well to tally three times and bring the score to five to four.
The score stayed there until the Becker half of the sixth inning when a few neatly placed hits along with a couple St. Croix miscues led to three more aces for the home club, making the score eight to four in favor of the Buzzards.
The St. Croix’s were not yet finished, and in the heat of the day and in front of the gathered spectators, the St. Croix’s were able to tally twice, closing the gap in the score. The Becker club, who were also fighting the extreme heat, tallied one time in their half of the seventh to make the score nine to six in favor of the Buzzards.
The final two innings were played with a lot of drama but without any scoring for either team. The final score was Becker Buzzards 9, St. Croix’s 6.
